Trouble-shooting your Business Broadband - What's the Problem?

Following these very simple steps may help identify or even fix your broadband issues

Important - All these tests should be done ONLY at the Master Test Socket of the line that your broadband is provided on.
If you don't know what or where your Master Test Socket is just CLICK HERE

First step - Check your telephone line

  • Plug an analogue (basic household) telephone in to the master test socket.
  • Do you hear a dial tone?
  • If you can't hear a dial tone, report the problem to your telephone line provider
  • If that's us give us a call or CLICK HERE.
  • If you can hear a dial tone then continue on to the next step.

2nd Step - Is your line quiet or noisy?

  • Dial 17070. This will take you to a BT line test facility. The telephone number of your line will be read back to you.
  • Now press 2 for the Quiet Line test. This test will silence the line - now listen to how quiet the line is.
  • If the line is noisy with crackling, hums, buzzes, clicks or other distortion, report the problem to your telephone line provider
  • If that's us give us a call or CLICK HERE.
  • If your broadband line is quiet and clear of noise then continue to step 3.

3rd Step - Are your micro-filters working and fitted correctly?

Micro-filters are used to separate the broadband and telephone signals on your phone line.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Anything connected to your line needs to pass through a micro-filter - they are very important and a huge number of broadband faults and issues are a result of faulty or incorrectly fitted micro-filters.

For details of how micro-filters should be fitted and how to test them CLICK HERE
If you're happy that your micro-filters are fitted correctly and you're still having problems go on to step 4.

4th Step - Checking your broadband router

Ensure the router is plugged in to the micro-filter which is plugged in to the master test socket and that only your PC is directly connected via a cable and NOT via any wireless connection.

You'll notice that your broadband router has a series of lights. There are many different makes of broadband router but in general they all have similar series of lights.

  • Is the Broadband\BB\DSL light on and steady?
  • If this light is on it indicates that the broadband service is active.
  • If this light is not on report the problem to your Broadband provider, if that's us give us a call or CLICK HERE.

  • Is the Internet light on and Steady?
  • If this light is on it indicates that the Internet connection is active
  • If this light is not on report the problem to your Broadband provider, if that's us give us a call or CLICK HERE.

If you've tried all the tests so far, it's likely that you have a broadband connection but are experiencing slow broadband speeds.
